I recently came across Al Pacino’s half-time speech in the movie Any Given Sunday as I was searching for some inspiration.
Pacino’s delivery is brilliant.
I couldn’t help but think how it also applied to the life of business.
I’ve been involved in a number of different new business pitches and the team that usually wins is the team that pays attention to detail, the team that strives for perfection, the team that is willing to fight for every single inch.
After it’s all said and done - that’s what it comes down. Inches.
And if there are simply too many days in a row that you find yourself not willing to fight for the inches then it’s time to find something new…

What if you’re not really an “inches” kind of guy? What if I’m more down pulling together a couple of “big plays” that impress and win the game. Look at the Patriots. Their running game sucks. They don’t go for inches. They go for yards.
I’m not disputing that the little things make a difference. They do. But don’t be afraid to throw a Hail Mary on 4th and inches.
Don’t go for the Hail Mary on 4th - its not worth the risk. Its dangerous. Its playing texas hold-em poker, on-tilt and playing blind. The odds aren’t in your favour.
Don’t gamble the farm unless your 100% certain.
Unless you wanna take .05 % chance.
